چکیده

The nearby Mira-like variable L2 Pup is shown to be undergoing an unprecedented dimming episode. The stability of the period rules out intrinsic changes to the star, leaving dust formation along the line of sight as the most likely explanation. Episodic dust obscuration events are fairly common in carbon stars but have not been seen in oxygen-rich stars. We also present a 10-μm spectrum, taken with the Japanese IRTS satellite, showing strong silicate emission which can be fitted with a detached, thin dust shell, containing silicates and corundum.

The light curve of the semiregular variable L2 Puppis: II. Evidence for solar-like excitation of the oscillations

We analyse visual observations of the pulsations of the red giant variable L2 Pup. The data cover 77 years between 1927 and 2005, thus providing an extensive empirical base for characterizing properties of the oscillations. The power spectrum of the light curve shows a single mode resolved into multiple peaks under a narrow envelope. We argue that this results from stochastic excitation, as see...

The enigmatic outburst of V 445 Puppis - a possible Helium nova ?

JHK spectroscopic and photometric observations are reported for the enigmatic, nova-like, variable V445 Puppis which erupted at the end of 2000. The nearIR spectra are hydrogen-deficient and unusually rich in CI lines. The important CI lines are found to be positioned at 1.133, 1.166, 1.175, 1.189, 1.26 and 1.689 μm. Model calculations for the CI lines are done to make the identification of the...

Dissecting the AGB star L2 Puppis: a torus in the making

Aims. The circumstellar environment of L2 Pup, an oxygen-rich semiregular variable, was observed to understand the evolution of mass loss and the shaping of ejecta in the late stages of stellar evolution. Methods. High-angular resolution observations from a single 8 m telescope were obtained using aperture masking in the near-infrared (1.64, 2.30 and 3.74 μm) on the NACO/VLT, both in imaging an...

Comments on “ The long - period Galactic Cepheid RS Puppis . I . A geometric distance from its light echoes ”

Context. The luminous Galactic Cepheid RS Puppis is unique in being surrounded by a dust nebula illuminated by the variable light of the Cepheid. In a recent paper in this journal, Kervella et al. (2008) report a very precise geometric distance to RS Pup, based on measured phase lags of the light variations of individual knots in the reflection nebula. Aims. In this commentary, we examine the v...

The Very Slow Wind from the Pulsating Semiregular Red Giant, L2 Pup

We have obtained 11.7 μm and 17.9 μm images at the Keck I telescope of the circumstellar dust emission from L2 Pup, one of the nearest (D = 61 pc) masslosing, pulsating, red giants that has a substantial infrared excess. We propose that the star is losing mass at a rate of ∼3 × 10 M⊙ yr . Given its relatively low luminosity (∼ 1500 L⊙), relatively high effective temperature (near 3400 K), relat...
